Illinois has some of the highest property taxes in the country. Additionally, our state has an extremely high number of government taxing bodies per capita. This is evidenced on our property tax bills, which list all the government units that tax our properties.
On top of property taxes, we are also taxed in Illinois through income and sales taxes. However, how these funds are distributed back to local government often results in the people of the 45th Senate District not receiving their fair share of the taxes they’ve paid. An equitable distribution of tax dollars from the state would alleviate pressure on local taxing bodies and reduce property taxes.
I favor legislation that caps property taxes and allows local taxpayers to vote on any property tax increases through a referendum. This means that each government entity must get approval from voters before increasing taxes. High property taxes cause property values to decline, so taking action to reduce them is crucial and leads to a more accountable local government.
